How to do a sliding scale for therapists new to private practice

A popular way for people to price themselves accessibly is using the Green Bottle:

I started off using a similar model in 2020 but unfortunately in my personal experience people took advantage of it e.g. would talk about having a high paying job in sessions after identifying they were in Jar 3 or 4 in intake. This might just have been due to my inexperience at maintaining boundaries or having hard conversations but I’ve found other ways to practice that ethically align for me.

I have a set private practice fee of $150/hour and refer people who cannot afford to free and/or low cost services as an alternative (including a service I work with 2 days/week). I am also in the process of registering to be a Victims’ Services Counsellor to open a few spots every week for accessibility.

There are many ways to practice accessibility and ethically that doesn’t mean sacrificing your own financial health as a therapist. If you want to talk about this further or get support setting up private practice just book in a clinical supervision session with me 🙂
